PROCLAMATIONS OR PRESENTATIONS:
PROCLAMATION: February is African-American History Month.
Mayor Dan Craighead
Proclamation
of the City of Seymour, Texas
Whereas, Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) was born to parents who had been
slaves. Neither his Mother nor Father could read or write. Mr. Woodson
had to work to earn money for the family and did not start school until
later than most children. But, his motto was "it is never too late
to learn." He became a high school teacher; and was sad to discover
that none of the schools taught the history of black Americans. He started
the American Negro Academy to study the important things black people
had accomplished and on February 19, 1926 Woodson established "Negro
History Week" which is now been expanded, and is celebrated each
February as African American History Month in the United States; and
Whereas, The Seymour Independent School District currently has enrollment
of approximately 600 students from varied cultural and racial backgrounds
including students of African-American Heritage; and
Whereas, The City Council supports the study of the history of all cultures
and ethnic groups whose contributions served to enrich our lives as
Americans; and
Whereas, The history of Black Americans is a field of study that has
been under-emphasized in our country; to the detriment of us all,
NOW THEREFORE I, Dan Craighead, Mayor of Seymour, with and on behalf
of the City Council of the City of Seymour on this 16th day of February,
2006 proclaim that February 2006 is
“African American History
Month”
in the City of Seymour, Texas. I join with President George W. Bush
in calling upon public officials, educators, librarians, and citizens
to observe this month by educating themselves about the many achievements
of African-Americans.”
