Texas Hunting
License Regulations

Under Texas law, every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after September 2, 1971,
must successfully complete a hunter education training course and have the Hunters Safety Card on
their person while hunting.

Under Federal law, every hunter is required to have a Hunters Safety Card on their person while hunting on Federal land.

Texas accepts an independent study method that involves a two-part process:

1) Independent study through an online course. Select one from a menu at: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/learning/hunter_education

2) Home Study / Skills Trail Testing led by a certified hunter education instructor such as Howard Pearlman.
Students must successfully complete a hunter skills trail and a live firing exercise.
They must also pass a written exam.

Skills Trail, Ethics
and Live Fire Exercise

This portion of the test will take four hours and will include one hour of hands-on activity out of doors. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Do not wear “flip flops” or sandals. Tennis shoes are acceptable.

Please arrive at the designated location fifteen minutes early as the class will begin
promptly and students and your instructor will be leaving for the outdoor skills trail and live fire.

Prior to class time you will need to have the following items with you:

Your Certificate or worksheets from the online class.
We can not accept your Student Application without this.

$15.00 cash registration fee
$10.00 cash for facilities fee.

Your Texas Driver's License and Social Security numbers are requested by the
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for your Student Registration Form but it is not mandatory for you
to furnish them. Having your Social Security number on your Student Registration Form
will allow you to conveniently replace your Hunter's Education Certificate if it is lost.
