The City of Seymour experienced
“Tornadic Winds” March 4, 2004. This weather episode damaged
houses, fences, awnings and utility lines. In Fall of 2004 the City of Seymour applied for a HOME Grant through the State of Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA), which is funded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). We were notified in August of 2005 that we had finally been approved for a $500,000 grant to replace up to nine (9) homes. As this is a ‘tornado relief’ grant, no match is required from the City. The homes must be completely demolished and replaced if they cannot be brought up to the strictest of building codes for $20,000 or less. In November of 2005, GRANTWORKS, the grant consultant agency from Austin that the City has partnered with, came to town to begin accepting applications. Of the applications received, five (5) citizens were determined to meet all the qualifications (tornado damage to the primary homestead due to March 2004 tornado, low-income, and physical disability/Senior Citizens preference). In July, the five citizens met at the Portwood Arts and Civics center to contract with the builder, Legacy Builders/Mr. D’Amico. The spirit was lively as these Seymourites made their carpet, tile and roof shingle choices. The federal EPA studies have been done and the builder is scheduling the work now, in conjunction with the GRANTWORKS representatives. Soon the dirt will begin to fly! |
