The
"SEYMOUR GOES HOLLYWOOD" Relay For Life Spectacular! held at
the Ag. Pavilion on Friday, June 9th, was a great success. The teams did
such an outstanding job! The American Cancer Society RELAY FOR LIFE events are held all over the world and are the main fundraiser for the Cancer Society. RELAY 2006, our third in Baylor County, looks as though we will clear about $15,000.00. This means that even with fewer teams, we raised about the same amount of money this year as last year. The RELAY, which is an OVERNIGHT event, was a long party from beginning to end. The event kicked off with a reception for all Seymour cancer survivors. This was held in the Seymour High Cafeteria - the survivors ate supper and cake amid the 'Hollywood' inspired-decor. The survivors then reported to the Ag. Pavilion in their purple 'Survivor' shirts. Congressman Rick Hardcastle - introduced them to take the first lap, called the 'Victory Lap', around the path. We enjoyed live entertainment from 'First Baptist Church Senior Choir - And Friends!!', and 'Lance Burnett and Friends'. That is what RELAY is all about, coming together as a community - working toward this common goal with your friends. Our luminaria service involved approximately 150 luminaria. Each bag represents a life. A survivor is honored with a luminaria, a loved one is remembered with a luminaria in their memory. The money raised will go to cancer research, patient services, education and advocacy efforts. As an established RELAY, in Seymour/Baylor County we can take OUR rightful place as a contributor to the recent breakthroughs in the battle against cervical cancer. We hope that this development of the new vaccine for the cervical cancer virus will lead to more vaccines and more types of cancers becoming a thing of the past. |
